5th Annual Alumni Game - July 29th, 2006
This year's game was a blur... the old age is getting to be too much! What we do know is that
we played... and the White Team defeated the Red Team by a score of 8-7. There are rumors that
White GK Doug Cardosi (C'90) played well... although no evidence of this is available!
WHITE ROSTER- Tyler Agypt, Doug Cardosi, Tom Carlson, Alex Dyon, Ben Dyon, Jon Hartner, Pat Hopkins,
Josh Karsten, Ross Morizzo, Trent Sands, Scott Steib, Jason Wisnowski
RED ROSTER- Casey Bartolucci, Colin Beazley, Jon Franzese, John Hagenberg, Tom Hagenberg, Danny Heidtke,

2005 ALUMNI GAME

(Click on the thumbnails above to view the full size images.)
The 4th Annual Broncos Soccer Alumni Game was played July 30th, 2005 in front of a raucous crowd of
about 50 spectators (actually not too bad for an alumni game!) This years game plotted the "Young Guns"
vs. the "Old Timers," and while the youngsters had the better overall play and chances, the wisdom of
the wily, senior team was too much for the pups to overcome!
After taking a 3-1 lead in the beginning of the match, the Old Timers saw that lead evaporate just seconds
before halftime, when the score was knotted at 4-4. Highlights of the first half included some clever skills
from Tyler Agypt and Chris Toomer, as well as several terrific saves by both goalkeepers- Ginny Gilbert for
the Young Guns and John Franzese for the Old Timers.
The second half was all about the gray team as the Old Timers scored three goals while also holding the
Young Guns to only one tally. The game slowed down quite a bit as very few players looked as if they had
anything left in the tank after halftime... especially the younger ones who haven't learned how to achieve
that "post high school/weekend warrior fitness" level. Kyle Patterson's two second half assists along with a
goal to go along with it were the difference in the last 40 minutes. Way to go Kyle, especially on your 21st
birthday!
So in the end, the "Old Timers" (those who were three or more years removed from BHS) defeated the
"Young Guns" (graduates from the last two classes) by a final score of 7-5. "Man of the Match" honors
were incredibly tough to hand out as so many players played well. But with 3 assists and one goal,
birthday boy Kyle Patterson has to be included in the post-game awards! Also, Old Timers goalkeeper
John Franzese C'02 played a magnificent game in between the pipes and deserves a piece of the honor.
Since we have two people sharing it so far, why not keep it going? We will! Forward Colin Beazley C'01,
who scored 4 goals and defenseman Kevin Niwa C'02, who held things down quite well along the back
line should also be recognized for their roles in securing the win for the geriatric gang. Congrats to these
gentlemen as well as everyone who attended and participated, especially the Old Timers!
We hope everyone had a great time! Thanks to EVERYONE who came out to participate or just be a fan!

'EVENS' TRIUMPH OVER 'ODDS' BEHIND 4 LATE GOALS
INCLUDING PATTERSON'S OT GAME WINNER!!
The 3rd Annual Broncos Soccer Alumni Game was a fierce contest and in the end the tradition
of intelligent and tenacious soccer at BHS was kept in tact! In the 100th minute (that's right,
20 minutes of added time) Coach Andy Stengren played a fantastic ball into Kyle Patterson who left
Odd goalkeeper Doug Cardosi in his wake with a near post bomb that not even Oliver Kahn would
have snared! It left the 'Odds' wondering who was keeping time (drat, it was Greetis!) and knowing
that their opportunity had been squandered! The 'Evens' celebrated with dancing and glee.
For this years match, teams were divided based on graduating year with those from odd years
competing against those from even years. While the Even team had a substantial advantage of
youth, the Odds were loaded with all-time leading point getter Paul Miceli, future MLS star
Ryan Miller, and Coach Steib who will offer to carry Miller's bag if/when he is playing professionally.
Things seemed pretty even at the onset of the match... the only glaring advantage was with the
Evens who had Rob 'Djemba-Djemba' DeMano as their netminder, and my oh my was he on his
game in the match!
The scoring opened for the Evens with Steve 'Razov' Lannefeld tallying his second career alumni
game goal in the 5th minute (Justin Montrie assisted.) That lead would be short lived as Ryan Miller
equalized for the Odds only a minute later. From there it was a lot of solid play from the Odds
and much frustration for the Evens. With goals from Colin Beazley and Ross Morizzo, the Odds had
gained a 3-1 advantage in only the 15th minute. The remainder of the 1st half was a battle of stamina,
as Coach Ryan Stengren put his stamp on the match as the hardest working player over 27 years
old.
The score held at 3-1 through halftime and in the 48th minute, Phil 'Lanky' Swarbrick delivered a ball
to the feet of this years Man-of-the-Match award winner, Kyle Patterson. Patterson shelved the ball
atop the outstretched paws of Odds goalkeeper Cardosi bringing the score to 3-2. Hoping to
squelch any thoughts of victory, Paul Miceli worked his way in front of the goal and scored a
one-timer after some great combining was done by Beazley and Morizzo. With the score 4-2 in favor
of the Odds, they went back for more an increased the lead o 5-2 on Morizzo's 2nd goal (Brett Migdal
assist.)
Certainly, with the game at 5-2 for the Odds... and with only 10 minutes to play... it should mean a
victory for those in white, right?! "Hold your horses there tiger!" That's right... 4 unanswered goals,
by Justin Montrie, Andy Stengren, Nick Sutter and the game winner by Patterson undid what seemed
to be the sure victory for the Odds. And what was arguably the play of the game came just before the
Evens leveled the score- Jack Auriema made a non-goalie save off of the goalline keeping the score
at 5-4 instead of 6-4 for the Odd team. Well done Jack!
Twenty-five former players and coaches left it all on the field (including Paul Ronto who made a
special trip in from Colorado for the game and Chris Derks- who made his alumni game debut!) It
was a great time of seeing some old friends, playing some ball, and burning some calories! After the
match several players enjoyed lunch together at Bennigan's in Lake Zurich, and after that
Coach Steib, Doug Cardosi, Nick Sutter, Brett Migdal, Adrian Sak, Kevin Niwa and Phil Swarbick
played the links at Palatine Hills Golf Course (and Cardosi stole the show there!)
We hope you all enjoyed the day and we look forward to seeing you at next year's match!
AND... don't forget, we will also hold another Christmas Vacation lunch party in December
for anyone in town over the holidays! Details on both of these events will posted here, so be
sure to visit the site for info and updates!
As always, GO BRONCOS! ~Coach Steib

2nd ANNUAL ALUMNI GAME GOES DOWN AS A THRILLER!
The 2nd Annual Broncos Soccer Alumni Game went extremely well as 28 former players
participated in the festivities. The game was fast paced (okay, maybe only at times...) and
came down to the wire as current goalkeeper coach Greg Zaffke shelved the game winning
goal past the Schick "Man of the Match, Tim Rietz (who was feline-like as the last minute
goalkeeper for his squad.) The overtime winner spoiled the comeback bid of the BLACK
TEAM, who trailed 7-5 with only a few minutes in regulation.
Prior to the beginning of the game, the mouth of Steve Lannefeld (C'02) opened... and my
was the sound painful. He "prophesized" that he would score 5 goals in the match... and
early on he started toward that claim as he opened the game with a solid smack past Coach
Steib who was tending the net for his squad. Don't worry, that would be all Steve would
collect in the scoring column. The RED TEAM tallied a second goal on a diving header from
Nick Fridano (C'03) with Jeff Klick (C'03)earning the assist for a brilliant serve from the left
flank. The RED TEAM leads 2-0.
Coach Matt Kemp brought the BLACK TEAM back with a sick piece of skill. His goal was
so impressive, it gave his squad the confidence needed to score 3 additional goals, taking
a commanding 4-2 lead. Colin Beazley (C'01) netted the first two of those goals and Matt
Glaysher (C'89) the third, just moments into the second half. But RED would not be
denied.
Goals from former teammates Robb Gibson (C'01) and Paul Ronto (C'01) beat BLACK
TEAM goalkeeper Ryan Stengren (who had only enough athletic ability to stick out a leg
and hang in the net rather than try to actually catch the ball which was a disgrace to the
game and athleticism! So... the game is again deadlocked, this time at 4 goals apiece.
Then came the "Kyle Patterson Show." Kyle (C'02) buried three goals in a 15 minute span,
giving the RED TEAM the 2 goal cushion (In the middle of Kyle's flurry, Jason Jellovitz did
manage to score the 5th goal for the reeling BLACK TEAM. With the score 7-5 and only
minutes to play, Jeff "Slick Afro" Sansone (C'99) and Colin "Hat Trick 2 years in a Row"
Beazley evened the game, but the damage inflicted while Stengren was in net proved to be
too much for the BLACK TEAM to overcome as Zaffke's overtime Golden Goal brought the
RED TEAM to a frenzied level of joy in their celebration.
Congrats to all who played and a special thanks to 1st time referee Greetis who managed
to officiate a flawless match! (It should be know that Greetis, formerly known as Chris
Greetis, will now be going by only "Greetis" as he has discovered his Brasilian roots!)
We hope to see you all again next year! Until then.... GO BRONCOS!
